Terms of Service
Last updated: May 25, 2026
1. What HewnTree Is
HewnTree is a product definition tool that uses AI to help you turn a rough idea into a structured set of requirements. You describe your idea, answer targeted questions, and HewnTree builds a requirements tree that captures what your product needs to be.
2. Your Account
You must provide a valid email address and create a password to use HewnTree. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure. If you suspect unauthorized access, change your password immediately and contact us at support@hewntree.com.
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account.
3. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use HewnTree for any illegal purpose
- Submit content that is harmful, threatening, abusive, or hateful
- Attempt to manipulate the AI system through prompt injection or similar techniques
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the AI prompts or system architecture
- Use automated tools to scrape, crawl, or bulk-access the service
- Create multiple free accounts to circumvent usage limits
- Resell or redistribute HewnTree's output as a competing service
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.
4. Your Content
You own your ideas. Everything you create in HewnTree — your idea descriptions, answers, comments, and the resulting requirements tree — belongs to you. We do not claim any intellectual property rights over your content.
By using HewnTree, you grant us a limited license to process your content through our AI pipeline solely for the purpose of providing the service to you. We do not use your content to train AI models or share it with other users.
5. AI-Generated Output
HewnTree uses AI to generate questions, build your requirements tree, and provide suggestions. While we strive for accuracy, AI output may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies.
Example: HewnTree may classify your idea incorrectly, generate questions that miss important angles, produce a tree structure that doesn't match how you'd organize it, or suggest a leaf node that's already covered elsewhere. These are inherent to AI tooling. You should review every output before acting on it.
HewnTree's output is not professional advice. It is a tool to help you think through your product requirements — not a substitute for professional product management, legal, technical, or business advice. You are responsible for reviewing and validating all output before acting on it.
6. Plans, Limits & How Tokens Work
Tokens are the processing units used by every AI interaction in HewnTree — generating question batches, committing answers, building or updating tree nodes, processing comments, and running safety checks. Every interaction consumes tokens. Your plan determines how many tokens you have available.
Free Plan
- Tokens: 50,000 lifetime (no monthly reset)
- Ideas: Up to 3 ideas created, ever
- Batches: Up to 3 question batches total across all ideas
- Comments: Up to 3 tree comments total across all ideas
- Deletions: Unlimited — you can delete any idea at any time
- PDF export: Not included
- Email nudges: Not included
Idea Pass ($5 one-time)
- Tokens: 350,000 per pass (enough for one thoroughly defined idea)
- Ideas: +1 idea creation slot per pass purchased
- Duration: 30 days of Pro features from purchase (or from your current expiry, whichever is later)
- Batches & comments: Unlimited during the pass period
- PDF export: Included
- Email nudges: Included
- Stacking: Buy multiple passes — tokens and creation slots stack. Two passes = 700K tokens and +2 idea slots. Expiry extends by 30 days per pass.
- Auto-renewal: None. A pass is a one-time purchase.
Pro Monthly ($29/month)
- Tokens: 4,000,000 per month (resets on your billing anniversary)
- Ideas: Unlimited
- Batches & comments: Unlimited
- PDF export: Included
- Email nudges: Included
- Billing: Recurring monthly subscription. Cancel anytime from your account settings or Stripe's customer portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you retain access until then.
What happens when you hit a cap
If you reach your token cap, AI interactions are paused until your tokens reset (monthly for Pro) or you upgrade to a higher plan. Your existing ideas, tree nodes, and data remain fully accessible — only new AI-generated actions are blocked.
If you reach a creation limit (ideas, batches, or comments on the Free plan), you'll see an upgrade prompt. Existing work continues to be editable.
Payments & pricing changes
All prices are in USD. Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your payment card information.
We may change pricing in the future. Existing subscribers will be notified at least 30 days before any price change takes effect on their subscription.
7. Refunds
We do not offer refunds for partially used subscription periods or Idea Passes. If you cancel your subscription, you retain access for the remainder of the paid period.
If you experience a technical issue that prevents you from using the service, contact us and we'll work to resolve it.
8. Account Deletion
You can request account deletion from your account settings. For paid users, deletion occurs at the end of the current billing cycle to ensure you receive what you paid for. For free users, deletion is immediate.
Once deleted, your data is permanently removed and cannot be recovered.
9. Service Availability
We aim to keep HewnTree available and reliable, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. The service may be temporarily unavailable due to maintenance, updates, or circumstances beyond our control. See §10 Service Dependencies below for the full picture of what we depend on and why we can't guarantee continuous service.
We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features of the service at any time. If we discontinue the service entirely, we will provide at least 30 days' notice and allow you to export your data.
10. Service Dependencies
HewnTree depends on third-party services to operate. See our Privacy Policy §4 for the full sub-processors list. These include AI model providers via OpenRouter, infrastructure providers (Supabase, Vercel, Upstash), payment processing (Stripe), email delivery (Resend), and error monitoring (Sentry).
We do everything in our power to provide reliable service, but we cannot guarantee:
- Continuous uptime. Any of our dependencies may experience outages outside our control. Examples: an AI provider's API is down or rate-limiting heavily, a Stripe webhook is delayed in transit, a Resend email is delayed by the recipient mail server.
- That AI-generated content is correct, accurate, or fit for any particular purpose. See §5.
- That a specific feature remains available at all times. We may suspend a feature if a critical dependency becomes unavailable.
- That every transactional email arrives. Email delivery is inherently best-effort. Critical actions (password reset, MFA recovery) have alternative paths via the account UI.
When a dependency fails, we surface the error to you where reasonable (banner, error message, retry prompt). We monitor uptime and respond to outages, but our response time depends on the underlying service's recovery.
We are not liable for losses caused by third-party service outages, AI model errors, or service interruptions beyond our reasonable control. This is in addition to (and consistent with) §11 Limitation of Liability.
11. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, HewnTree is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including loss of data, loss of revenue, or business interruption.
Our total liability for any claim arising from these terms or your use of HewnTree is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or $100, whichever is greater.
Nothing in this section limits or excludes liability that cannot be limited under applicable law (e.g. for gross negligence, willful misconduct, or mandatory consumer-protection rights).
12. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll notify you by email or through a notice on the site. Continued use of HewnTree after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
13. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Romania. Disputes arising from these Terms or your use of HewnTree will be resolved in the competent courts of Romania, without prejudice to mandatory consumer-protection rights in your country of residence.
If a court of competent jurisdiction finds any provision of these Terms unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in full effect.
